I started thinking about what to post today right after I posted yesterday. It came pretty quickly to me – which is weird because I’ve been having trouble thinking of things to write.

But now that I’m at the end of this challenge and I have a lot of new followers, I thought it would be helpful to spend some time explaining why my blog is called “Mary, Martha, & Sparta.”

What I wanted to share with you is actually the first post I ever posted. It explains why I added the “Spartan” part to the “Mary and Martha” part of the blog. It’s actually my favorite part!

Soo…I cheated a little bit and copied and pasted that first post. I tried to rewrite it a little bit, and then I just decided to keep it just the way I had it at first. I did change the picture to a more current picture.

Well, this morning kind of sucked.

A couple weeks ago I noticed Noah had what I was pretty sure was a cavity in one of his molars. It had shown up really suddenly, and it totally took me by surprise!

I had his teeth cleaned a couple months ago and it seemed like things were fine.

Turns out…they weren’t fine.

You guys, guess what? It’s almost the end of October!

Know how I know? I have pretty much run out of things to talk about.

All day long, I couldn’t think of one single thing that I might say that you might care about.

Blah.

I sat here staring at the computer screen for….quite a while, and I just kept typing a sentence and deleting it. Such is writing sometimes.

So here I sat.

I could have told you about my day, or what we’ve been up to lately, but no one wants to read my diary – waste of time.

I decided that I will just tell you about the only thing I’ve learned today. I learned it from Aidan, and it’s the only reason I’m writing anything at all today.

Today is Sunday.

It’s the day we’re supposed to rest.

In this time of craziness, and all of my stress, I’ve just been enjoying my day being back home with my boys. We spent the night at my in-laws’ house and woke up and just relaxed all day.

I’ve had this song stuck in my head all day. It’s been so wonderful to just reflect on how good God is today. Because He is so good. Even in the stress, the chaos, and the hard parts of life.

The thing that I want the most for my kids is for them to love Jesus. Like chase-after-Him-with-total-abandon love. Jesus-is-oozing-out-of-me love. Share-His-love-with-everyone love.

One of the biggest things that I hope comes out of loving Jesus for them is a strong sense of empathy.

I once heard someone describe empathy as “fellow feeling.” Think about that for a quick second. Fellow feeling – “I feel it, too.”

  • “You’re frustrated? Yeah, I’d be frustrated, too.”
  • “I can see that you feel left out. I understand – I’ve felt that way.”
  • “My heart hurts for you that you’ve been so wronged.”

Empathy is a gateway character emotion. If you can feel empathy for someone, so many other things fall right into place – love, mercy and grace, patience, selflessness, advocacy and intervention.

We’re in the middle of fixing some things in our front yard. We had some very large, very MESSY trees that flanked our driveway. They were pretty from afar but such a hassle to live with.

When the landscapers came to take down the trees, it started okay. They cut down all the branches pretty quickly and things seemed to be going smoothly.

Until they had to take out the stumps.

Do you ever have those days where you think things are kind of going okay, and then all of a sudden stress hits you like a ton of bricks?

That is me today. I have had so much stuff to do, but I totally felt like I had a handle on it.

I’ve been all, “Look at all of the things I’ve crossed off. I’m gonna be totally fine. Look at me go! I got this.”

And then life is all, “Yeah…you so don’t got this. You forgot to unfold the list – there’s a whole other side! Suckaaaa!!”

*Cut to me hyperventilating*
