31 Days of Mary, Martha, & Sparta

31 Days of Mary, Martha, & Sparta

I’m sorry…what happened?

How is it October already? I’m just like a little bit freaking out.

Well, now that it’s here, so is a new and scary challenge!

For the month of October, I’m taking a blogging challenge that has been around for a few years. It’s been taken on by many bloggers, and it’s hosted by Crystal Stine (check out all the bloggers here!).

I’m not going to lie to you guys…this will be stretching myself – big time. But I’m excited about the things that will come from it!

Let’s be honest about something, though, okay? It’s not going to be the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen every single day. It won’t change your life on the daily. I’m not like some super spiritual guru, where you will walk away from this October shining with the afterglow of your magical experience here.

But what I can promise you is this: I will show up every day and be honest with you.

I want the next 31 days to be a fun and uplifting thing for all of us! I have some super fun things lined up for this month, and I have some (maybe a little hard) truths to speak.

You guys, I’m super excited about this. I hope you check out the whole month of posts! They will all be linked to the previous post and the next post, so you can follow them around the month. I also have a list at the bottom of this post.

So here’s where I need your help. I have most of the month planned out, but I want to know what you want to hear about, too!

Many of the bloggers in this challenge have picked hard and fast topics to stick to throughout the month (31 Days of Choosing Joy or 31 Days of Organizing). Since this blog is such a hodgepodge, I wanted our 31 days together to be that way, too. And I wanted you to have some say in some posts!

Leave a comment here or on my Facebook page and tell me some things that you want to hear about!

Don’t forget that you can subscribe to the blog to get all of these posts in your email, so you won’t have to check back every day this month! Just put your email in on the right-hand side of the page and then confirm your subscription once you get an email!

Today, for the first post of the challenge, I want to talk about carving out time to spend special time with my kids. I’m not great at this, as I’m a “To-Do List Person”. We’re a crazy bunch, List-Doers.

I’m smack dab in the middle of learning how to look up from my list and see life happening around me. I’m learning how to see a mess, take a deep breath, and choose a fun activity instead.

And whaddya know? I’ve just been presented with the perfect opportunity for me to practice! For us, it’s Fall Break starting today. For the next two weeks, I get to have my kids home, and it’s super important to me that we don’t waste it. There used to be a great potential for me to waste a lot of this time trying to get things done.

But this time, I’m committing to a different list for the next two weeks. Tonight, instead of writing a list of chores and projects that need to be done around the house, we are going to sit down after dinner and make a list of fun things my boys want to do.

I have to tell you that lately, we have been in a crazy place as a family. There have been a lot of big things happening in our world, and we’ve been gone a lot. We’ve been in what I call “Survival Mode” around here. I love the craziness of our lives, and we are so very blessed that we get to lead lives that are this full. But when our life makes the transition from full to busy, we need to make some changes.

So I am declaring that these next two weeks be set aside for fun, recuperation, and each other. I would guess my never-stopping boys will choose to spend the entire break burning through all of our energy, and I think we will all sleep soundly for the duration.

Here’s to fun instead of chores, swimming instead of screens, late nights instead of early mornings, and ice cream instead of cereal.

Here’s to full instead of busy. Wish us luck!
