31 Days {Day 19} – Graceful Cleaning

Welcome back to the 31 Days of Mary, Martha, & Sparta! If you missed it, here is the link to yesterday’s post!

In my house, there are 5 bedrooms, and 5 bathrooms. There are also 3 boys and, well, me.

Growing up, my mom would just close my door when my room was a mess – we fought about enough…she just let it go. In high school, I was hit or miss, but as I got older, I started to pull it together. When I was in college and had my own space, it was immaculate. Bathroom – spotless. Bed – made. Clothes – folded and away. Bless my grown-up single self.

Then came a husband, and I really kept up with cleaning with another human very well. I was okay with the extra laundry, having a boy in my bathroom…ah, young love.

I had my first baby, and I was committed to keeping up with having a clean house. I found some shortcuts and just made it a point to stay up a little bit longer and get things picked up before I went to bed.

Next came another baby, and well…just whatever.

I constantly fight a battle with myself. My heart wants clean and organized, but my body wants a nap. They’re at an impasse.

Over the last few years, I have been able to find a much better balance and standard for my house and my life. I don’t want to say “no” to fun things because I have things to clean. On the other hand, I want to be able to step out of the shower and still feel clean.

So now, my cleaning mantra is, “Good enough.” I show myself some cleaning grace.

Deep cleaning isn’t as high of a priority in my everyday life as it once was. Now, I set aside some good concentrated time to get some more deep cleaning things done – baseboards, blinds, etc.

The rest of the time, it’s wiping down bathrooms on my way out and keeping things basically picked up. I vacuum less than I used to, but I still try to run it over the common areas when I have a quick minute. Dishes wait until the next day (I’m a soaker now, though, so there’s that). You’ve already seen how I do laundry.

Now, I am grateful for Mondays when we have life group at our house, so I know that at least once a week I will have a reason to pick up my house. It keeps me on track.

Today, I just wanted to remind you to show yourself some cleaning grace. People don’t care what your house looks like when you’re busy caring what their heart looks like.

Happy Monday, grace-ful cleaners!

Today my graceful cleaners were Stacey and Deb. That's my form of deep cleaning. Amen. But I remember the shock of living with boys....bless you Hayley!
